The sports fishing enthusiast knows there are different ways to catch a fish. These include hand and fishing line fishing or angling, trolling, jig and bow fishing, dredging, kite fishing and ice fishing.
A fishing rod is a sophisticated casting tool fitted with line guides and a reel for line stowage. Deciphering the different types of fishing rods may be a bit tricky as you can forget the idea of “one-fits-all” fishing rods. There actually are almost as many kinds as there are game fish. Nevertheless, the more common types of fishing rods include the bass fishing rod, the trout fishing rod and the crappie fishing rod.
Freshwater and saltwater bass are one of the most popular game fish because they can be fierce fighters and worthy opponents. To stay in the game you will need a type of fishing rod that can take a lot of punishment, is flexible and has a line that can go for quite a ride. As bass can come in variable sizes, your rod will also have to be sized accordingly.
Trout fishing poles are usually less flexible than the ones for bass and should run anywhere from 7 to 10 feet (2 to 3 meters). As these types of fish are less aggressive the rods can be made from graphite. Note: trout can also be caught through fly fishing.
Crappies are rather tiny fish so you can get away with a lighter fishing rod. This type of fishing can involve jigging, or snapping the rod up and down continually to lure the fish toward the bait.
For coarse cyprinid fishing like carp, a carbon fiber rod is the best to use. When you go after salmon make sure your tool has a comfortable grip.
Telescopic fishing rods are designed to collapse down to “fit in a pocket” and open to a full size rod. They are made from the same materials as conventional one or two piece rods. Other types of tackle gear are spin casting rods, spinning rod, ultra light rods, and surf rods. So if you decide you want to go on a fishing expedition ask yourself what kind of fish you’d like to catch, how much you are willing to spend and what pole you could handle best. Having the correct fishing rod, line, nets and other tackle can ensure that you bring in the fish that you so much desire – or not.
