Ah, it is that time of the year again when joyful thoughts of traveling are making your heart go pitter-patter. You bought your mini deodorant, tooth paste, other assorted toiletries and snack bars and you’ve finished your packing check list for your 7-day cruise. Now it is time to check out your suitcases. As you open the closet door you gasp at the shabby condition your luggage is in and realize it is time for another shopping trip.
Luggage is an important component of any travel, whether it is inland or overseas, long or short trips, for business or pleasure. Lugging a huge steamer trunk around is “passé” and today’s designer luggage comes in different colors, styles, shapes, sizes and materials like nylon, an abrasion-resistant material used for both coverings and linings. It usually is lighter than canvas and the more expensive leather luggage. Hard-sided cases are often made of materials such as polypropylene, ABS plastics, or metal. Box-constructed cases with metal or wood frames on all six sides can be covered with leather, vinyl or fabric. If possible find pieces where the side edges are protected. Don’t worry! It will not going to take away from the attractive appearances of your piece.
With modern times, the types of luggage have increased. Using zippers, expandable “transformer” bags and cases can be made bigger or smaller. With piggyback bags, carriers are attached to one another by zippers and then you have the special luggage packing systems which are designed to organize clothes and keep them wrinkle-free. Preferred are water-resistant materials inside so you never have to worry about discovering a puddle of liquid on the bottom of your case, eating away at your valuables.
Backpacks, handbags, garment and duffel bags all belong to the same family and you will have to find out which one will suit your needs best, or the person you are buying it for. Is there a need for a regular suitcase, or one on wheels that can be pulled? Also consider the piece’s sturdiness.
Hard-sided – They provide maximum protection against outside forces and generally have combination or key locks added. Many hard-sided cases have wheels and pull straps.
Semi-soft cases – They are lighter in weight than hard-sided cases, are partially framed with soft, slightly expandable tops and bottoms. They still offer good content protection. They too usually have wheels and pull-straps.
Soft-sided cases – Often less resistant to outside crushes they are shaped by the way they are cut and sewn. Usually they are supported by stiffeners or partial frames and close with zippers. They are lightweight and the most expandable.
Luggage makers have created kid-sized luggage in bright colors and unique designs, just like for their parents. It can make traveling with little ones a lot easier and definitely more fun. |
