Comic books are not just for children.

Stacks were hidden in a desk or strategically placed underneath your bed. When the lights went out, you’d be reading them by flashlight under the covers. You remember peeking through the local comic book store window and staring wide-eyed at the racks of vibrant book covers splashed with every conceivable hero. Boy, if you only had the money to buy them all!

Comic books are popular and offer whimsical fun, epic adventure, gritty realism, and everything else you can think of. They come in as many types as there are novels, and are an equal yet more visual form of communication. They deliver illustrations and words in multi-page publications and appear most often in monthly editions. Their stories can be poignant, socially relevant, dark, amusing, romantic, action-oriented, and everything in between and they are collected for several reasons like appreciation, nostalgia, financial profit and value or simply to complete a collection that has already been around since you were a teen.

Comic books and their characters are a diverse source of entertainment. They can be based on real life or be pure fiction. They bring stories which come with jaw-dropping visuals and dialogue balloons revealing what is being said and thought.

Collecting comics is a widespread hobby. We all know heroes like Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, the incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, Batman, Spider-man, Flash, Bat Girl or Wolverine. These are just a few of the thousands of conquering idols that have kept us bewildered over the years. Every day artists create more finely rendered landscapes and new awe-inspiring, larger-than-life heroes who will dazzle us with their fantastic stories for years to come.

If you are thinking of starting your own comic book collection or want to help complete the one your friend raves about every time you visit, you can find current issues at the newsstand. Specialized comic book stores can offer you a decent selection of older and collector’s issues and may also be able to track down more unusual and rare copies. Flea markets, auctions or antique stores can also be good shopping places and last but not least, browse through the Internet. If you are serious about comic book collecting, it may be in your advantage to purchase subscriptions. This way you definitely won’t miss out on any issues.

It does not matter what the reason may be that your imagination currently is soaring and you can’t stop yourself from diving into those wonderful pages of mystery and suspense… All I can do is to wish you oodles of fun and hope that the best superhero wins!
