Off-road driving: ATV’s and Quads

They are enthusiastic and quite often fanatical. They race, trail ride, go back-country hunting and they enjoy every minute of being near or on their vehicle. Welcome to the world of ATV’s and quads.

The term “All-Terrain Vehicle" (ATV) and Quads is mainly used to describe any number of small open motorized buggies or tricycles designed for off-road driving. Getting a proper start in riding one of those vehicles is important, regardless if the vehicle is used for professional or recreational reasons. Wearing proper protective gear and respecting the environment is a must as well as providing adequate supervision for younger riders. Beginners could also benefit greatly from a training-course and hint-hint… that would make for a super gift idea.

The rider sits on and operates the 3- or 4-wheel vehicle like a motorcycle. 6-Wheelers do exist, but are more geared towards hunting, and they are more the exception than the norm. Safety is of the upmost importance, as like with driving any kind of vehicle, accidents can happen fast. Here are a few rules to consider:

Children and youngsters under the age of 16 should only ride vehicles designed for their age group, not adult ATVs.
All ATV users should take a hands-on safety training course.
Always wear a helmet and safety gear such as boots, eye protection and gloves while driving.
Never drive an ATV on paved roads and preferably not at night.
Flags, reflectors, and lights should be used to make vehicles more visible.
Never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Never drive with a passenger unless your vehicle is made for it. There are some ATVs that are designed for two riders. Passengers on tandem ATVs should be at least 12 years old.

If an ATV or Quad is in your budget choose the one that is right for what you want to do, be it racing or just exploring the countryside. The deep treads on some ATV tires are effective for navigating rocky, muddy and root covered terrain, but they can also dig channels that may drain boggy areas, increase sedimentation in stream crossings and damage existing nature trails. If you respect nature, it will also respect you. So off you go, down those desert trails through wild rock formations, hard packs, hill climbs, winding sand washes and twisty scrub tracks.
