Murals… transforming wall creations!

You’re leaning forward in an attempt to hear the man standing behind the streetlight. What is he doing at dusk in a Paris streetscape, whispering to an attractive woman who is leaning tantalizingly out of a window? He tilts his Fedora and as he is walking away, stumbles over a damp cobblestone. In the distance you notice the Eiffel Tower glowing in the dark and… it can’t be and yet, the mystery man just passed the cabaret that is carrying your name. What is going on and were are you?

Murals are wall paintings and some sorts date back to prehistoric times. The actual term “mural” hit the mainstream with the 20th century “muralista” art movement in Mexico and, ever since has conquered the interior and exterior decorating business by storm. Murals come in many styles and techniques and are painted in a variety of ways, using oil or water based media. They decorate a specific area and can transport you to a different time and place. They can fill difficult to accessorize niches or large-wall entryways. They are a great gift to decorate a baby room, spice up a bar or even give your kitchen that “look of Tuscany” that reminds you of your Italian vacation.

There are two types of murals. The ones painted by artists and then there are wallpaper style murals. Painted murals can be rather costly if you have to hire an artist to create a masterpiece and take longer to finish. Wall paper print or vinyl murals come in various dimensions and are put on just like regular wallpaper. It is a project you can do yourself; they need minimal preparation, do not take up a lot of time and are affordable for any budget. And, for those who want to give their artistic talents a challenge, you can actually buy rub-on transfers and paint by number mural kits.

Murals can not only help redecorate your home, but some programs actually encourage young graffiti artists to develop their artistic skills to beautify their cherished neighborhoods. Outdoor wall murals are great for creating tranquil environments even in your own backyard. They can make your garden look bigger, need less care than the real deal, accentuate your love for nature and even let you enjoy blooming plants and trees that otherwise would not survive in your climate. Have a wonderful summer outdoors!
